Spaghetti and Tomato Basil Sauce

An easy, basic Italian-style tomato sauce that uses mostly pantry ingredients. If you don’t have basil, stir in a little butter at the end, or a little soft goat cheese.

1/4 cup (50 mL) chopped fresh basil
1/2 tsp (2 mL) freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsp (25 mL) PC Splendido Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Cold Pressed
1 can (796 mL) PC Organics Whole Tomatoes Canada Choice , coarsely chopped
1 pkg (454 g) PC Organics Spaghetti
1/2 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1/4 tsp (1 mL) salt


  1. In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat. Cook onion for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until soft.
  2. Stir in garlic, salt and pepper. Stir in tomatoes and juices. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer. Cook, uncovered and stirring occasionally, for 15 to 20 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Stir in basil.
  3. In saucepan of boiling, salted water, cook spaghetti for 10 to 12 minutes or until tender but firm. Drain. Serve with sauce. Serve with grated Parmigiano Reggiano, if desired.

Chop tomatoes right in can using clean kitchen shears.

Streamline cooking time by boiling pasta while sauce simmers.
